Nathaniel Parker Willis was a popular poet, a prolific essayist, and a successful editor. He was born in Portland, Maine, the oldest son (in a family that eventually included eight children) of Nathaniel Willis and Hannah Parker Willis. His siblings included Richard Willis (thirteen years younger than Nathaniel), who would later achieve a solid reputation as a composer (ed today principally for the melody of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"), editor, and music critic, and Sarah Willis, who under the pen-name of Fanny Fern would become immensely popular as a columnist for various New York City
